You are in for a fast-paced, asymmetric game based on the mechanics of territory control. Each player will take the lead of one of the powerful factions: the just and moderate House of Atreides, the cruel and ruthless House of Harkonnen, the reckless and greedy Imperium, and the free and unconquered Fremen.
Each faction strives to spread its influence over the desert planet, constantly taking over more and more territories, building reliable citadels, and collecting precious spices! After all, whoever controls Arrakis owns the spices! Whoever owns the spices rules the universe!
Gameplay
The game lasts for a maximum of 5 rounds. During each round, players perform 7 consecutive phases:
- Sandstorm. Roll an eight-sided die and determine the distance the sandstorm can move. If your units are in a location that the sandstorm has reached, they all die.
- Spice Tide. Reveal the top card from the spice deck. Place the spices on the two locations indicated on the map. If you revealed a worm card, destroy all remaining spices and units located on the locations indicated on the previously revealed card.
- Getting cards. You can take a maximum of 4 combat cards and 3 trade cards into your hand. However, you will have to pay 2 spices for each of the trade cards you take.
- Revival. If some of your units or one of your leaders is killed, you can revive them. The first 2 units will cost nothing to revive, but each subsequent one will cost 2 spices. Reviving leaders always costs 2 spices.
- Deploy and move units. You can land your units anywhere on the planet, paying 1 spice per unit. You can also move units between locations. This way you will occupy free citadels or recapture occupied ones. Or you will land in locations where there has been a recent influx of spices.
- Battle. Enter the confrontation for the coveted locations and citadels, playing a battle plan consisting of four parts (cards). Beware of traitors, because opponents could recruit one of your leaders. Such a surprise can nullify all your battle plans and strategies. By the way, for each leader you destroy during the battle (including your own leaders), you receive the coveted spices.
- Collecting spices. Each of your squads in the spice location can collect 2 units of this precious resource. So stock up and use them wisely!
And the ruler of Dune becomes..!
The game ends in two cases:
- At the end of the third, fourth or fifth round. If one of the players controls 3 citadels, he is declared the winner.
- At the end of the fifth round. If none of the players controls 3 citadels, each player gains 5 victory points for each of their citadels and 1 point for each unit of spice they have. The owner of the most achievements in the game wins.
Good together
The classic «Dune» did not really take into account the possibility of competing for control of Arrakis in duel mode. Instead, the creators of this game took care of those who have an insatiable thirst for irreconcilable duels.
The board scales well for two participants, and the unique abilities and asymmetry of the factions presented in the game provide ample space for unexpected tactical tricks and far-sighted strategic decisions!
