Players are invited to embark on an amazing and dangerous journey through the world of The Witcher. You will not meet Geralt himself, the famous monster hunter. He has not yet been born... However, there are enough other witchers in the world. There are a lot of them: in remote settlements and endless swamps, among abandoned ruins and in dark mountain caves, on perilous roads and in ominous forest thickets. For a generous reward, they will go to hell and back. And if you have already gathered at the gaming table, then try yourself in the role of these harsh and clever mercenaries.
The adventures of the witchers several centuries before the birth of Geralt
After the fall of the Witcher Order, five major schools – Wolf, Viper, Cat, Bear and Gryphon - trained hunters to be the creatures of darkness. Students went through inhuman trials, but then became true warriors. Trained mutant hunters traveled the world with two swords behind their backs - iron against people and silver against monsters - killed terrible creatures for money and collected trophies, gained fame in battles and defended the honor of their schools.
At the beginning of the game, participants choose witcher tablets and components of their school`s color. They shuffle the starting decks of their schools and place them next to the tablets. To win the game, you must be the first to get 4 trophies, defeating monsters, other witchers and increasing your skill to level 5.
Game progress
Players take turns, clockwise. A player`s turn consists of 3 phases:
- Movement and Action Phase
The player plays cards from his hand to move and perform actions in locations. If the player discards a location card with a terrain symbol of a connected location, he moves to the corresponding adjacent location. By discarding 2 cards or 1 card and 1 coin, he can move to any connected location.
In a location, he can perform a location action, play poker and/or play an adventure.
- The location action is depicted on the playing field.
- Witcher Poker. Can be played 1 time with each witcher in the current location. Opponents bet 1 coin and add 1 coin from the bank. When playing Witcher Poker, players try to roll poker combinations on dice - pairs, threes, straights, full houses, four of a kind, etc. The player with the strongest combination wins. He gets the money.
- Adventure. Play an existing adventure card if the active player is in the desired location.
- Combat, meditation or research phase
- Battle. The player can fight another witcher in the same location. Or with a monster. Before the fight, a health deck is formed from the discard and deck cards. If this deck runs out, the witcher is knocked out, and his opponent wins. In a duel of witchers, other players can bet on the victory of one of them.
During the combat turn, the witcher can use potions, his specialization, or effects on equipment and trophy cards. He lays out one or more cards from his hand, trying to make a combination of related cards. Having laid out 1 or more cards, the witcher applies effects to all cards of the formed combination - takes new cards into his hand, increases his defense value, deals damage, lowers the opponent`s defense value, and if it is equal to zero, then forces him to discard cards from the combat deck.
At the end of the combat turn, the active player takes cards from the combat deck according to the value of his attack skill. If the active player wins, he takes one of his trophies from the opponent, advances along the trophy track, and then exhausts himself. An exhausted player destroys (removes from the game) as many of his cards as the exhaustion value on the track.
In a duel with a monster, a monster battle deck is formed - the number of cards is equal to the monster`s health value. When a monster takes damage, cards are discarded from this deck. On the monster`s turn, the top card of its deck is revealed. The monster hits or bites. The player takes damage and discards cards. Having defeated the monster, the player acquires its card as a trophy, takes 2 coins and moves along the trophy track, after which he becomes exhausted.
- Meditation. The player chooses an available trophy card, moves the marker one space along the trophy track and becomes exhausted. Meditation cannot move the marker to the highest slot on the trophy track.
- Exploration. The active player`s neighbor draws an exploration card from the city or slum deck and reads the options aloud. The active player chooses one of the options, after which he learns the result of his choice. The effect is played immediately. If it is an adventure card, the player places it near the tablet. The adventure can be played after reaching the specified location.
- Action Card Phase
A player can discard any cards from his hand. Hand limit – 7 cards. If there are less than 3 cards in his hand, the player draws cards from his deck to have 3 cards in his hand.
A player must purchase one of the 6 cards on the field, paying its price with cards from his hand. The price depends on the card`s position in the row. After discarding the necessary cards, the player takes a card from the field into his hand.
End of the game
The game ends immediately when one of the players` markers reaches the highest division on the trophy track. That player becomes the winner.
