A cooperative story game of incredible beauty about the epic adventures of the guards. The game follows and develops the plot to the mechanics of "castle defense".
Epic Adventures of the Guards
Once upon a time, the Empire waged a merciless war against the Witcher King, the high priest of the Father-of-All-Monsters. The victory came at a heavy price: the Empire fell apart, and later ceased to exist altogether. After the era of imperial peace, this land plunged into dark times — times of complete devastation and sadness, continuous clashes between small possessions and gloomy religious beliefs.
The only thing that remained unchanged — is the mission of the guards of the former Empire. Leaving their fortresses and citadels, the Guardians continue to defend the inhabitants of the former Empire, explore the wilderness, unite communities, fight monsters and return the treasures of the Emperor, giving people hope for the revival of the Empire. Now is your time to join the ranks of these brave Guardians!
Oltre! — this is the battle cry of the Guardians.
Chronicle of the Fortress Defense
In this cooperative game, players take on the role of brave Guardians who help the inhabitants of the Satrapy — a province that their superiors have ordered them to take care of. The Guardians must rebuild the fortress to ensure peace and tranquility for the inhabitants. At the beginning of the game, the Guardians receive orders from their superiors, which involve the performance of certain tasks. Fulfilling orders — This is the surest way to win.
However, it`s not that simple, as various events will occur simultaneously, making life difficult for the guards. During each game, a story (chronicle) will unfold, adding different situations for the guards. Along the way, the guards will encounter incidents, short scenes in which they can gain fame (or not). Players must help the communities of the Satrapy when problems threaten them. The guards will also have to face all sorts of unforeseen events.
If the guards can stick to the intended course, maintaining the defense of the fortress and preserving their prestige, they will reach the last chapter of the chronicle and finish it. For a happy ending, the guards must fulfill their assignments as best they can.
Game progress
After choosing a chronicle, assignments of one of the difficulty levels, and guards with special abilities, players begin the game.
The guards take turns (clockwise). A round consists of 2 phases:
The player rolls a misfortune die and moves the marker to the right along the misfortune track depending on the result of the roll. The track consists of 4 divisions. Upon reaching the 4th division, the marker returns to the 1st division, moving in a circle.
A player can perform 2 different basic actions.
Skill Check
There are 4 types of skill checks: soldier, artisan, scholar, and traveler. The sentry determines how many skill dice he will have to check a particular skill. The fortress gives each sentry 1 die when checking any skill. Each sentry has 1 die of a particular skill. Some buildings give 1 skill die to each sentry.
The sentry rolls skill dice and counts the number of successes. A success die gives 1 success. The "Effort" die allows you to spend 1 health point to gain 1 success. By paying 1 provision, the sentry can reroll any skill dice once during the check. Usually, at least 1 success must be rolled to pass the check. However, some checks require a higher number of successes.
Victory and Defeat
After opening the last chapter of the chronicle, the guards must pass a final check. Depending on the chronicle, the end of the game may be immediate or imminent.
Depending on the result of the final check, the last chapter of the chronicle ends in victory or defeat (in long chronicles, victory can be small or large). Players must turn the page and read the appropriate ending to their adventure — defeat, small victory, or large victory.
