A witch in Ukrainian demonology is a sinister female sorceress who possesses powerful magical powers and is capable of harming people through her ability to cast spells. According to legends, the Witch can transform into various animals - cats, birds, dogs - in order to remain invisible or run away from pursuers. One of her special powers is "corruption," a sorcery that can cause illness, bad luck, or even death.
In folk beliefs, the Goddess was often attributed with evil deeds, such as spoiling livestock or crops, bringing ruin to the family, as well as the ability to cause quarrels between people. It was believed that she could be jealous of the happy life of others and because of this harm prosperous families.
To protect against the Witch, various charms were used, such as consecrated crosses, garlic, wormwood or red threads, which were hung above the door. It was also believed that prayers, holy water and special orders could neutralize her magic. In addition, the people believed that if you reveal her true nature or find her "witch`s inventory" - for example, potions or magical tools - you can deprive the Witch of her power.
Sometimes, in order to protect against witches, people performed special rites of cleaning the house or yard to expel the witch and prevent her influence on the family or household.
