Stradchata
Sufferers in Ukrainian demonology are evil and dangerous spirits that come from the souls of children who died unbaptized or died tragically. It was believed that these souls could not find peace and wandered between worlds, trying to take revenge or draw the living into their unfortunate fate. According to beliefs, their souls fly for seven years through the forests and swamps, not having the opportunity to get to the other world. They can also appear near cemeteries, where their graves are left without proper care. It is believed that they can harm the living, including causing illness, misfortune, or even luring people to their deaths.
Stradchata, or Poterchatka, according to legends, are very short, completely naked, with big, shiny eyes and stubby blue bangs on their heads. Their voices resemble the croaking of a frog, which makes them even more disturbing to those who hear them.
In folk beliefs, it was believed that the Martyrs could not find peace because their souls were deprived of the religious rite of baptism. Their fate is constant longing and suffering, which they seek to pass on to others.
To protect themselves from the Stradchats, people performed purification rites, prayed for dead children, and tried to leave gifts of food or milk at the places where they appeared to propitiate them and help them find peace.
