Noise

Noise in Ukrainian demonology is a spirit or a mythical creature associated with sounds in nature, especially the rustling of trees, wind and other natural phenomena. Shum is believed to be the embodiment of a forest or natural force that is hidden in the voices of trees and forest sounds. Noise is sometimes perceived as the god of the forest and forest noise. It can be large, welcoming, rich, and sometimes endless and mysterious, embodying all the mystery and majesty of nature.

Noise is the forest itself with its secrets and charms. But sometimes he can be scary and dangerous, especially when his harmony is disturbed. Shum becomes especially angry when the foresters fight among themselves. At such moments, he raises a storm and breaks ancient trees, showing his fury and strength.

According to popular belief, the Noise can lead travelers astray, causing them disorientation, anxiety, or fear. He can be both friendly and hostile, depending on the behavior of a person in his possessions. Its presence can be felt through the rustling of leaves, the whistling of the wind, or the crackling of trees, and this sound can both enchant and frighten.

To ward off the possible negative effects of Shum, people tried to treat the forest with respect, bring gifts such as bread, milk, or flowers, and recite incantations before entering the forest. It helped appease the spirit and get its protection while traveling through the forest paths.
