Morok

Morok in Ukrainian demonology is an ominous spirit that causes darkness, fear and confusion. It is associated with nights, fogs and deep darkness, into which it plunges people, causing them to lose their orientation. Darkness acts as a spirit that gives a person a feeling of fear and incomprehensibility, making the path invisible and dangerous.

In some versions of folk tales, it is believed that Morok is the son of Mara, the goddess of death and winter, and Chernobog, the deity of chaos and evil. In this interpretation, he acts as a demon of lies and deception. His power lies in manipulating people`s minds, creating illusions and causing fear and confusion. Darkness can make a person see something that is not really there, or believe in deceptive visions. This connection with Marusei and Chernobog emphasizes his role as a spirit of darkness and lies.

Darkness is usually invisible, but sometimes it can appear as a shadow or a dark figure appearing at the edge of vision. It often lures people into the fog, into the woods, or at crossroads where they can easily get lost. Its effects cause confusion and panic, and make people wander for hours, even in familiar places.

To protect against Morok, people used consecrated amulets, crosses or prayers. It was believed that turning to the light forces can help overcome its influence and get on the right path, avoiding the traps created by this spirit.
