Molfar
Molfar in Ukrainian demonology and Carpathian folk beliefs is a healer, sorcerer or magician who has deep knowledge of nature, magic and otherworldly forces. Molfar are part of Hutsul culture and play the role of mediators between people and natural and otherworldly forces. Their knowledge was passed down from generation to generation, and the molfar were considered powerful and respected people, capable of influencing the weather, warding off evil spirits, curing diseases and predicting the future.
Molfar can use different types of magic. They are known for their ability to control the elements, especially the weather - to cause rain or drive away a storm. They also know how to use charms, witchcraft methods and herbs to heal the sick, remove curses and protect against evil forces. Molfar had a special set of tools for his rituals, including special knives, candles, bells, and magic wands.
Molfar are divided into several types depending on their abilities:
Light molfars are those who used their powers for good, healing people, helping to protect crops, banishing evil spirits, and curing diseases.
Black molfars were those who used dark powers, cast curses, and could harm other people by inflicting damage or curses.
Molfars were often called in case of natural disasters, when the village was threatened by hail or storm. They could "stop" storms and drive them away from villages with the help of magic spells and rituals. In some legends, the molfar fought against evil spirits or demonic forces to protect people from their influence.
An interesting aspect of Molfar magic was the ability to predict the future or see the hidden. It was believed that molfar can see the fate of a person and advise him how to avoid dangers.
To protect themselves from the negative influence of dark molfars, people turned to light molfars or used consecrated charms.
