Lisun

Lisun in Ukrainian demonology is a powerful spirit of the forest, an assistant to the forester who protects the forest and maintains balance among its inhabitants. He is depicted as a very tall, thin man with long arms and legs, with gray or green skin that allows him to blend in with nature. His face is often hidden by thick, matted hair that looks like moss or grass, and his eyes can glow in the dark, giving him an eerie presence in the night forest. Thanks to its disproportionately long limbs, the woodchuck moves almost silently, which allows it to quietly chase travelers or monitor animals.

In addition to controlling the forest trails, the forest ranger plays an important role in maintaining the balance in the wild. He is the guardian of animals, particularly wolves, whom he guides and helps them find sick or weakened animals to hunt. This activity of the forester contributes to the natural cleaning of the forest and the maintenance of a healthy ecosystem, because it ensures that wolves do not excessively destroy other animal species.

People were afraid of his anger, so they brought gifts such as bread or milk to the edge of the forest to appease the forester and not cause his displeasure. To protect against his wiles, hunters wore iron amulets or consecrated objects, since the woodsman, like many other forest spirits, shunned iron.
