Forester is a mysterious creature of Ukrainian demonology that lives in the depths of the forest. She is depicted as a woman with long flowing hair entwined with branches and leaves, making her almost invisible among the trees.
She is the guardian of the forest and its inhabitants. She takes care of trees, animals and plants, keeps order and punishes those who harm the forest. People believed that the forester could get confused in thickets, cause sudden fear or whisper strange sounds to a person, if he appeared in her possessions without respect. Her laughter or voice can be heard in the wind rustling in the treetops, especially at dusk.
It is believed that the soul of a woman who died in the forest or was connected to it during her life could become a forester.
In her evil form, the forester turns into a dangerous and vengeful creature who ruthlessly protects her forest from any trespassers. She can appear as an old, bony woman with wild, disheveled hair tangled in branches and thorns. Her face is covered with deep wrinkles, and her eyes glow with an ominous glow, reminiscent of wild beast eyes that follow her every move.
An evil forester can cause a person to experience sudden fear or hallucinations, causing them to see eerie images or hear strange, disorienting sounds. It can confuse paths, forcing travelers to wander in circles for hours, and even cast darkness or thick fog to disorient them. If a person cuts down a tree or harms an animal, the forester can cause illness, misfortune or even death.
Her presence is felt through a sudden ominous stillness in the forest, when even the birds fall silent, or through a sudden, bone-chilling cold breath of wind. The forester can also transform into various beasts, such as a wolf or a snake, to attack or intimidate trespassers.
To avoid meeting the forester, travelers sacrificed small gifts - berries, bread or milk, leaving them on stumps or near old trees, believing that in this way they would please the spirit of the forest.
In case of meeting with a forester, it was advised not to look her in the eyes, not to respond to her voices, and to quickly leave her territory without looking back.
