Board Game War of the Ring
A large-scale military strategy based on the trilogy of J. R. R. Tolkien "The Lord of the Rings".
The participants of the game are invited to lead the opposing sides - the Free Peoples and the Shadow armies. While the war for dominance in Middle-earth continues, Frodo and the Fellowship of the Ring head to Mordor to destroy the One Ring in the flames of the Fiery Mountain and turn Sauron`s troops into dust.
Epic military strategy
The game is played until one of the sides wins. The game round is divided into several phases.
- In the "Fellowship" phase The Free Peoples player can announce the location of the Brotherhood and activate one of the Free Peoples if the Brotherhood is in a city or fortress of that nation.
- In the “Chase” phase, the Shadow player places his dice in the chase cells. The total number of dice must not exceed the number of Brotherhood. Then the players roll all dice except those intended for the chase.
- In the main “Action” phase, players take turns performing various actions using the dice.
- In the final phase of the round, victory conditions are checked.
Performing actions
Depending on the symbols on the faces of the dice, players can perform various actions in the main phase:
- «Character» allows the leader to move with an army or attack the enemy. The Shadow can also move the Nazgûl, and the Free Peoples can play an event card, advance along the Brotherhood track, hide the Brotherhood, separate companions from it or move companions.
- «Army» allows you to move your troops and attack enemy ones.
- «Mobilize» allows you to hire reinforcements.
- «Event» allows you to take one event card or play an event card from your hand.
Events are divided into military and heroic. Event cards can be used in battle.
Battle flow
Players attack enemy armies using some event cards and the «army» and «character» symbols on the dice. The attacking player can send the entire army or part of it into battle. Players receive dice according to the number of units (maximum - 5). Leaders in the troops allow them to roll the dice. Opponents play event cards as battle cards, roll dice, reroll them and remove losses. The battle ends if one of the armies is destroyed, if someone retreats or the attacker loses the desire to attack.
Victory conditions
- The Shadow wins if the Ring`s influence on the Ringbearers reaches 12 on the corresponding track.
- The Free Peoples win if the One Ring is destroyed.
The Shadow celebrates a military victory if it controls a Free Peoples settlement, which gives 10 victory points in total. The Free Peoples also win if they control Shadow cities and fortresses for a total of 4 victory points.
