Board Game Takenoko

Here is the anniversary edition to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the game. The new edition has improved design and improved game balance, in particular, some panda and plot tasks have been changed. According to the new rules, improvement tokens and irrigation canals must be placed immediately, improvement tokens can be placed on plots with bamboo, the gardener`s task can be completed only when he himself is on one of the specified plots, and rain adds a bamboo segment even to an unirrigated plot.

A logic game about a Gardener and a Panda

The participants of the game will be transported to picturesque Japan to do gardening in the imperial palace. According to legend, the Japanese emperor was once given a Chinese panda bear as a gift. The panda was settled in a garden that was looked after by a hardworking gardener. And all would be fine if the panda didn`t love bamboo so much. Now the gardener has a problem.

Completing tasks in the imperial garden

During the game, the participants will expand the garden with new plots, irrigate them, grow three types of multi-colored bamboo and feed the ever-hungry panda. They move the common figures of the gardener and the panda and perform secret tasks on the maps.

The tasks are divided into three types:

• Panda. Have the panda eat the bamboo segments marked on the map;
• Plots. Arrange the plots according to the configuration on the map;
• Gardener. Grow bamboo shoots of a given height and in a specified quantity.

Each completed task will bring victory points at the end of the game. In the end, the player with the most points wins.

Gameplay

At the beginning of his turn, the player rolls the weather die. Depending on the rolled result, the player receives bonuses:

• «Sun»: additional action;
• «Rain»: place a bamboo segment on the field;
• «Wind»: the ability to perform two identical actions;
• «Clouds»: receive an improvement token;
• «Storm»: move the panda and receive a bamboo segment.
• «?»: You can choose any side of the weather cube.

Next, the player performs two different actions out of 5 possible:

• lay a new plot;
• get an irrigation canal;
• move the gardener in a straight line and grow bamboo segments on the plot where he stopped, as well as on adjacent plots of the same color (bamboo grows only on irrigated plots);
• move the panda in a straight line and eat a bamboo segment on the plot where the figure stopped;
• take a task card of one of three types.

Completing a task is not considered an action. The game features three types of improvement tokens: the gardener can protect his bamboo from a panda, water the plot, or use fertilizer to make the bamboo grow twice as fast.

This is a great logic game that will appeal to everyone: adults and children, beginners and experienced players. The game boasts simple rules and a low entry threshold. At the same time, it has very deep gameplay and requires players to calculate their actions several moves ahead. The excitement is added by the weather cube and secret task cards.
