THREE IN A BOAT, NOT COUNTING BURLAKA
A military-adventure strategy about showdowns of fabulous beasts in fantasy forest lands. This board game is an outstanding phenomenon in modern game design. Participants are offered not only asymmetric factions, but also unique game mechanics for each of them.
It`s actually four games in one. One faction will play Euro-strategy, another - a stealth wargame with political coups, and the third - control territories and program actions. There is also a fourth faction, represented by a single burlak. Playing as Burlaka resembles role-playing games - the hero roams the field, collects items (= swings) and performs various quests.
GAME PROCESS
Before the start of the game, the participants decide on which side of the field (autumn or winter forest) they will play. They choose factions, get components of their color, and make an initial arrangement. The players take turns, successively playing three phases - morning, afternoon and evening. The game continues until one of the factions reaches the winning condition.
MARQUISE DE COTE
Marquise de Côté is the current ruler of the forest. The cats start with a good head start, since at the beginning of the game they have a workshop, a sawmill and a barracks, as well as warriors in almost all forest gaps. In the morning, sawmills bring wood.
During the day you can produce goods in the workshops. The cats perform their legal three actions and one additional action each for discarded bird cards. They can move, build a house, hire new units in the barracks, cut more trees at the sawmill or start a battle. In the evening, cats choose cards.
WINGED DYNASTY
Birds are the former owners of the forest, who intend to return power to their claws. In the morning, birds plan decrees, adding one bird card or one or two non-bird cards to specific slots. The day for birds is divided into two phases - before noon and after. Until noon, you can move cards to the slots of other decrees, as well as craft cards.
In the afternoon, the birds play the planned decree cards - and hire bird warriors, move them, start a battle or build nests. In the evening, the birds receive victory points based on the number of nests. An unpleasant feature of the faction is the turmoil that occurs in case of non-fulfillment or over-fulfillment of actions in one decree. During turmoil, the birds discard the decree cards and change leaders.
FOREST UNION
Faction of motley rebels preparing a forest revolution. These green mice get extra victory points for support tokens. In the morning, the revolutionaries stage mutinies, knocking out opponents from gaps and exposing their soldiers to them. After that, they campaign and place support tokens on neutral spaces.
During the day, the mice increase the number of supporter cards, add soldiers to the headquarters and craft cards from the hand. In the evening, revolutionaries move, start battles and place new support tokens on controlled gaps.
BURLAK
The bachelor raccoon is a lonely hero who goes about his business. Burlaka receives victory points for completing quests, for improving relations with other factions, for transferring cards to allies and for destroying enemy warriors. Burlaka performs actions using (turning over) objects.
Burlaka upgrades up to three used items in the morning. Each tea allows you to upgrade two more items. The raccoon then gets a free move. During the day, Burlaka moves (boot), starts battles (sword), raids (crossbow), searches for item tokens in ruins (torch), repairs broken items or makes new ones (hammer). Burlak must break one item when taking damage.
To improve relations and get an item from another player, Burlaka gives him a card of a suit that matches the suit of the current gap. A raccoon can complete a quest that matches the suit of the current gap by using the items listed on the map. In the evening, Burlaka can fix broken objects in the thicket.
WINNING CONDITIONS
To win the game, you need to score 40 points. Points are given for the production of items and for the destruction of buildings and tokens of opponents. In addition, each faction has its own methods of obtaining victory points. Also in the deck there are four cards of chaotic, coalition, economic and military victory. After activating one of these cards, the player removes his marker from the victory point track and changes the victory conditions for his faction.
