The amazing clang of metal from under the closed doors - a real soundtrack to evening races. The line between robot races and robot battles is thinner than ever, so get ready - it will be tough and intense!
This is a board game about racing for players who control robots, trying to "survive" at all the checkpoints of the factory. This is a strategic game for a party, the main principles of the gameplay of which are successful programming of robot actions and calculation of profitable routes.
How to play?
To begin with, players choose one of 19 race tracks according to the number and experience of participants and their wishes for the duration of the game. Players form a track field according to the chosen scheme and place their robots` fields and checkpoint tokens on the starting cells. After laying out all the necessary common components, players receive their personal robot boards, starting energy supply, and programming decks.
The Robo Rally board game is played in rounds, each of which consists of three main phases:
The priority of the move in all phases is determined by the location of the robot in accordance with the priority antenna chip on the playing field. The closer to the antenna - the earlier the move.
The goal of the players - to lead their robot through all the control points of the track before their opponents do. The race ends when one of the robots completes the program on the last checkpoint cell.
However, this race is not about speed, this race is about survival, because both the track and the opponents make a lot of efforts to undermine your plans and damage your "iron horse". Players put damage cards in their discard pile. These cards become part of the deck and limit your capabilities. The only way to get rid of them is to play them by placing them in one of the register slots. However, the price of this is unpleasant - you need to play the effect described in the damage card, return it to the appropriate pile, and then place a random card in the empty register.
Moreover, in addition to receiving damage, the robot can fall into a pit or find itself outside the playing field, which disables it and sends it to reboot. Reloading adds additional damage and also throws you back along the track to the last save point.
In the game, the location for the race is a factory, which is crammed with conveyor belts, gears, rammers, lasers and other equipment. And although the lasers will not bring anything except new scratches and program failures, the same conveyors can come in handy, as they help you move forward without spending programming cards on it. But meetings with rivals - a completely different thing, which will definitely not end in anything good. The interaction in the game is very direct, rivals can push you or aim at you with a laser, and be sure, that`s exactly what they will do! Maybe you should start first?
This is a classic that never gets old. Both visually and with some features of the gameplay, it resembles old 8-bit games, evoking a sense of nostalgia. And yet, its mechanics are still relevant today, because it successfully uses the need to calculate not only your own actions, but also the "surprises" that your opponents can prepare for you.
A logical and exciting, simple, but very interesting racing game - a great choice for any collection.
