Death Valley Journey
Death Valley is an easy-to-learn pocket card game with a luck check mechanic for 1-2 players. The aim of the participants is to collect the best combinations of cards in a series of trips and a scrapbook of memories. All cards feature highly atmospheric artwork by artist Fakhri Maulana, who PlayTale also knows for his work on Battle of the Crests and Tailed Adventures. A pirate`s legacy."
The game "Death Valley" is ideal for beginners or those who want to relax with an exciting filler, and the game-like variability and element of tactical planning will interest even more experienced players. If you like simple card games, PlayTale also recommends paying attention to the games "Language of Flowers" and "Crypt of Skulls".
Basic concepts
- Cards. The game uses 18 cards, each of which has the following elements: a threat type symbol (animal, flood, terrain and heat), the number of cards of that type in the deck, point symbols in the form of stars (optional), a property, a persistent property reminder (optional), and a fun fact.
- Rows of travel and albums of memories. During the game, each participant lays out cards in 2 rows in front of him. The first row, located closer to the opponent, is the travel row. It constantly changes during the player`s journey. The second row is an album of memories.
- Adjacent cards. If the text of the card mentions adjacent cards, it means all cards located to the left or right, above or below this card.
- Hidden cards. A card that lies under another is not active. Ignore her threat type, points, attributes, etc.
- Accident. If the active player has 3 threat cards of the same type in the travel row and memory album, they have an accident. Read more about this in the game layout section.
- Update. If there is no face-up card in the desert (added by a player to their travel row), reveal the top card of the deck.
Game board
Shuffle all the cards and form a deck. Place it face down between two players. Open the top card and place it next to the deck. This face-up card and the top card of the deck form the so-called desert.
Cards are always placed to the right of the rightmost card in a row. The rows are laid out one above the other so that the travel cards and memory cards form columns.
Players take turns adding cards to their travel rows and memory albums. Any active player can perform one of these actions:
- Rest. Move one card from your travel row to the memory album. You can hide any number of other cards from your travel row under this card. You can also shuffle any number of remaining cards from your travel row back into the deck.
If you have an accident (3 cards with the same threat symbol), you must take the rightmost threat card of that type in the travel row and put it face down into your discard pile, and the remaining cards from the travel row shuffle back into the deck.
The game ends when 1 card remains in the desert - the player with the most points wins.
Expanded edition
Often when you travel, you end up in interesting places that you didn`t even think to visit. Admire the amazing landscapes, dunes and ghost town of Panamint City under the midday sun. Death Valley can always surprise you.
The expanded edition of the game includes the Panamint City expansion, which contains additional cards and new rules. For games with this add-on, during preparation, select and separate cards of one of the threat types, and return the others to the box.
Thanks to the "Vultures" card property, you can hide cards under cards in the journey row. If a card is moved to another location, the cards hidden under it are moved with it. If a card is discarded, shuffled back into the deck, or returned to the wasteland, shuffle the hidden cards underneath it back into the deck.
