Freak
A freak in Ukrainian demonology is a demonic creature that symbolizes disfigurement, disease, and physical abnormalities. The word "freak" itself comes from the word "freak", which indicates something unnatural or twisted. It was believed that a Freak can appear in the human family as a result of a curse or the sins of the ancestors, becoming the embodiment of troubles and sufferings that fall to the fate of the family.
Appearance A freak is usually characterized by ugly features: its body is often described as disproportionate, with disfigured limbs or face. His presence brings illness, misfortune or even death. A freak is a symbol of degradation and destruction, both physical and moral.
Freaks could be associated with innocently born children who were born with physical defects, and were believed to be the result of demonic influences or punishment for family sins. Because of this, the attitude towards such children was often prejudiced in society.
To protect themselves from the Freak or avoid its influence, people resorted to various rituals. This usually involved prayers, appeals to the patron saint of the family, or consecration of the home. It was also believed that purity in relationships with loved ones and good deeds help to avoid the appearance of the Freak in the family.
