Werewolf

Vovkulaka is a character of Ukrainian demonology, a person who can turn into a wolf or a creature similar to it. Those who succumbed to a curse or made a deal with an evil force became werewolves. In human form, a werewolf can look like an ordinary person, but when full or under the influence of magical powers, it turns into a large, fearsome wolf with sharp teeth, red eyes and incredible strength. A werewolf in this state has a voracious appetite and attacks livestock or even humans.

Transforming into a wolf is often painful, and a werewolf can lose control of their actions in beast form. A person can become a werewolf through a curse, the bites of another werewolf, or as a result of dark magical rites. In folk tales, it is believed that werewolves can attack villages, kidnap children or destroy crops. They carry fear and danger with them because their anger is uncontrollable and violent.

To protect themselves from werewolves, people used charms and magical means. Holy water, iron objects and crosses served as the main protective symbols. It was believed that an aspen peg or silver balls could stop a werewolf if it attacked. Another way was to get rid of the curse by raising a magical spell through priests or healers. It was also important not to go out at night, especially during the full moon when werewolves are most active.
