Treasurer

A treasurer in Ukrainian demonology is a spirit that guards treasures hidden underground or in hiding places. He was considered the keeper of wealth, both natural and those that were hidden by people. The treasurer is always present where there are treasures and protects them from uninvited guests. He could be both benevolent to those who deserve wealth and dangerous to those who seek treasure with nefarious intentions.

The treasurer`s appearance is variously described, but he is usually depicted as a small man, resembling a gnome or a grandfather, with a wrinkled face and sparkling eyes that resemble precious stones. His clothes can be simple, but with elements of luxury - gold jewelry or precious stones. He often appears before treasure hunters as a ghost or an invisible force that frightens them or confuses the paths to the treasure.

The Treasurer can behave differently depending on who is trying to find the treasure. If a person approaches with pure intentions and has a just plan, the treasurer can open the way to wealth. But if the treasure hunter is greedy or dishonest, the spirit can frighten him, make him lose his mind, or make him wander in vain.

According to legends, after the death of a treasure master who violated the Treasurer`s rules or used the wealth with nefarious intentions, the spirit can appear with a flock of ravens to take his soul. A flock of ravens in this context symbolizes dark forces and death, and their presence emphasizes the punishing aspect of the Treasurer. This belief reminds us that the wealth guarded by the Treasurer must be used honestly.

To appease the Treasurer, people often brought symbolic gifts: coins, bread or other small items. It could relieve his anger and even help him find the way to hidden riches. It was important to approach the treasure hunt with respect for nature and the spirits in order to gain the favor of the Treasurer.
