Drowned man

A drowner in Ukrainian demonology is a spirit formed from the soul of a person who tragically died in water, especially by drowning. A drowned person is considered a restless spirit who cannot find peace due to his sudden and unnatural death. He lives in water bodies - rivers, lakes, ponds or swamps, and becomes part of the water world, maintaining hostility to the living.

Outwardly, the drowning man has a humanoid form with pale green skin covered in algae and mud, and his body often shows signs of decomposition. The sinker appears at night or at dusk, especially during calm weather or on days when the water is still.

The drowning man is dangerous because he tries to drag living people under the water so that they share his fate. Bathers or travelers who happen to be near water bodies at the wrong time can become victims. Its victims often become those who did not follow safety rules near the water or tried to tempt fate.

To avoid the danger of meeting a drowning man, people tried not to swim on dangerous days or at night. To protect against him, they wore consecrated amulets or left small gifts near the water bodies - bread, milk or a little honey to appease the spirit. Drowning people reminded people of the dangers of water and the importance of caution.
