Poloz
Poloz in Ukrainian demonology is a mythical creature, a huge snake that represents strength, wealth and underground treasures. Poloz is known for his ability to guard gold, treasure or jewels that he accumulates deep underground. It is often associated with otherworldly forces and can live near bodies of water, in forests or in mountains.
Polozo is described as a snake of enormous size, which is able to hypnotize its victims by looking them straight in the eye. It was believed that Poloz could haunt people who try to find or steal his treasures. Sometimes he is described as the patron of families or people who received wealth from him, but these unions always turned into misfortune.
In some legends, Poloz hunts young girls whom he keeps as his "wives". It is believed that if Poloz is interested in a girl, he will pursue her until he takes her with him. There is also a version that Poloz can absorb people or animals to maintain his strength and power.
Regarding protection, there were several interesting beliefs. For example, people tried not to approach places where Poloz lives, especially rocks or caves. Protection against Poloz also included traditional charms — prayers, consecrated crosses, and special rituals to purify places where these creatures could appear.
An important feature of Poloz was that, despite his fearsome reputation, he could bring wealth to those who found his favor. However, such unions often ended in tragedy, because Poloz does not allow a person to freely use his gifts.
