Nyavkun
Nyavkun in Ukrainian demonology is a spirit or demonic being known for its ability to foretell death or misfortune. Usually Meowkun is associated with sounds that resemble a cat`s meow or a human voice calling. It is believed that Nevkun appears at night or in the pre-dawn hours, scaring those who hear his sounds.
The Meowkun`s appearance usually remains invisible to humans, but its presence can be felt through its meowing, which grows closer and louder. It is sometimes believed that the Meowth can take the form of a black shadow or have feline features, further emphasizing its connection with the harbingers of death.
According to beliefs, if a person hears Nyavkun, it means that misfortune or the death of a relative will happen soon. Because of this, its sound was one of the most frightening signs for the villagers, who lived in fear of loss.
To protect themselves from Nyavkun, traditional methods of protection against spirits were used: charms, prayers, crosses and holy water. It was believed that one should not respond to meowing or approach the place where the sound is coming from. There was also a tradition of leaving candles or icons on the windows to protect the house from this spirit, to prevent it from approaching.
