Swampman

Bolotyanik in Ukrainian demonology is a spirit that lives in swamps, marshy lakes or swampy lowlands. He is considered to be the master of the swamp, just as the merman takes care of rivers and lakes. The Swampman controls all the living creatures that inhabit the swamps and makes sure that people do not violate the boundaries of his possessions. He can be dangerous to those who accidentally or intentionally wander into his territory, as he considers the swamp his kingdom.

Outwardly, the Swamp is often described as a humanoid creature with features that reflect its swamp origins. He has greenish-pale skin covered in mud and algae, and his body is covered in moss and bog. The eyes of the swamp man are dark and deep, reminiscent of the sleeping waters of the swamp, which hide their secrets. He is also sometimes depicted with long arms that can grab people and drag them into the swamp.

Swamp is dangerous because it can lure people to shaky swamps, where they quickly lose their orientation and can drown. It often attracts its victims through deceptive sounds or unusual lights that flicker over the marshes at night. If a person goes to the light, he risks getting trapped and never getting out of the swamp again.

In order to appease the swamp man, people tried not to violate the boundaries of his possessions and not to risk going too deep into the swamps. Fishermen and travelers left him gifts of bread, salt or coins to ensure safe passage through the swampy terrain. In addition, it was believed that the bogeyman could be scared away with consecrated amulets or prayers, especially if someone had gotten lost in his possessions and needed help to get out.
