Bagan

Bagan in Ukrainian demonology is a spirit or demon associated with nightmares, fear and anxiety. He appears at night and inflicts nightmares on people, especially those who do not observe certain rituals or live in sin. Bagan is often imagined as an ominous spirit that lives in the dark corners of the house or in the shadows where it is difficult to notice.

It is believed that Bagan can penetrate a person`s thoughts during sleep, causing terrifying visions from which it is difficult to wake up. Its main purpose is to cause anxiety in a person, to make him lose peace and sleep. In some regions, Bagan is also associated with spirits that can press on a person during sleep, causing a feeling of suffocation or inability to move ("witch night" syndrome or sleep paralysis).

Bagan is rarely depicted in a specific physical form, but he can be described as a shadowy or shapeless figure lurking in the darkness. There are more recent interpretations in which Bagan is depicted with ram-like horns. It is associated with other horned mythological creatures, although such features are not characteristic of the traditional image of Bagan.

To protect themselves from Bagan, people used traditional amulets such as consecrated crosses, prayers and special incantations. One way to scare off Bagan was to keep holy water by the bed or leave candles lit at night. It was also believed that cleanliness and order in the house help to avoid the influence of this spirit. People often turned to priests or healers who could perform rites of purification or protection from the spirit.

Bagan, as a spirit of night terrors, symbolizes anxiety and fears that come during sleep. It operates in secret, avoiding open encounters, and becomes active when a person is most vulnerable - during sleep or in a state of deep fear.
